Have you floated the Dickey?

I just want to float it for fun. Will probably take a kid. I probably won't even bring rods. I just want to float some strange, and haven't given the Dickey a shot yet.

Have you floated it recently? I have to imagine the flooding out there created some really fun log jams to work around?

I've heard it's super slack in a lot of places. What's the ideal craft you'd use to float it? I'm leaning towards a 2p assault raft or even a canoe.

Thank you.

All I've heard is that it's more marsh land than river. Be interested to hear what it's really like.

Way back when, there was an article, probably in STS, about floating the Dickey in a drift boat. I imagine it would be the lower river, but I don't remember any details.

When I first got interested in steelhead fishing, I hired Doug Rose (RIP) for my very first ever guided fishing day and we hiked into the Dickey and Upper Calawah. What an amazing day that was... The Dickey was slow and snaggy then and I'm guessing it still is. I drove up there last year to scout for a future trip but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I've also been thinking about it this year as well as some of notellums further south but I'm lazy and tend to stay close to home.

I floated it last week.

I'd recommend not doing it in a raft or drift boat. I think a drift boat would be hellacious unless you have a warn winch mounted on the front of it, hah. The river was probably 75% dead slack water - in a raft, you'd be getting a serious workout rowing backwards most of the day.

I took a canoe - and that worked well, until I can opened the bottom seam on an angular rock below the surface. D'oh! There's a bunch of calwah-esque angular rock in there, probably 4-5 log jams to portage.

I didn't fish. I don't know what's wrong with me - just wasn't feelin it and wanted to chill on the river and just enjoy the solitude.

Thanks for the report! What did you do after busting your canoe? Hopefully it was yards from the takeout.

I didn't notice it until I loaded it back on the truck - just the bottom laminate opened up, thankfully didn't take on water :)
Ah, sounds like a close call. Another 25 lbs of gear or a centimeter less of water and who knows. What material is the canoe? Sounds tough.

How many Sasquatch were seen?? Any rattlesnakes? Grizzly bears?? Armed meth heads?
