Hmm. We have a lot of woodpeckers, but this would almost have to be a juvenile, then? This gives a better idea of size. A little over 2"

No, not necessarily.

Downy Woodpeckers are little guys... only averaging about 6" long.
The wing feathers shown in @Bajema 's graph are shown in centimeters.

Beautiful feathers regardless.

EDIT.... Bajema beat me to it (y)

The chart is in cm, so I think the length fits. It’s also for the secondary feathers, not the longer primaries. I’m no expert on this though.
Ha - of course, missed that.

Have to keep an eye out, then. Pretty sure we haven't seen any of that type of woodpecker before.
Thanks y'all!

Barn swallows..near the top of favorite birds for many reasons. Easy to ID, spectacular fliers, friendly approachable nesters and here during best weather of the year. Not this year, of course. Hope I did not post earlier.

I'm actually camped in a bird sanctuary for a few days on the lower river. My wife joined me for the night and we took advantage of a nice weather window to watch some birds.

This included the local flock of Goldfinches which seemed to be extra perky.

We saw one of my favorite birds, the tanager, but I couldn't get a shot. There's also a moose hanging out down here. I'll see if I can find 'em in the morning.
