The kids and wife had mid winter break this week, so we headed out to Oroville to hang, camp out and put in some work on the property for the week. We showed up Friday night and got set up. Saturday morning started with the beautiful sounds of turkey everywhere!!! I counted around 120 the first day! We have been seeing them everyday. Today we crossed the border for 3 days of skiing at Apex mountain. Got in a few runs with my oldest, tomorrow it’s on! But…. I can’t stop thinking about all those Turkeys 😎41C87FC8-ACE7-4F0B-B281-4ED8A968F5F0.jpeg56474B47-DEDA-44CB-888E-14C0DCDBD22D.jpegDB6FD86B-CDA6-48F1-8DB4-EE6DC3ECDDD1.jpegDF16E6C3-2099-40AF-9177-192A9C6110F7.jpegBBB89428-DC9B-4FFC-A109-108ED5028027.jpeg

One year we had them on our property above Oroville. Even had turkey porn in the back yard early one morning. Haven’t seen one since. I’ve called up on Mt. Hull to no response, though I do find feathers while hunting grouse.

Hell yeah! PS, I dig the footwear 😁
I was wondering if anyone would notice😂😂😂 I was literally sitting in the camper eating macaroni in my Birks and this guy walked in. So I loaded the shotgun, walked out and shot it at 20yrds. I hunted tell noon, then worked on irrigation tell it was time to eat today. It’s nice to get lucky once in awhile…!

Yesterday I decided to slow cook a turkey leg in the crockpot all day. I put in a small can of salsa verde and covered the leg in carne seasonings. Chopped up fresh veggies and made an avocado salsa. Turkey tacos were a big hit!!!! It’s delicious.

Spring trip. But more of a blast/ cast/ blast.
Killed a great Tom the first night. Struggled finding birds for the next couple days. Did some driving, switched to fly rod for two days. Caught some pike on a fly. Back to turkey hunting some new public, and ended up shooting a younger bird.
TSS is the real deal.20230515_201716.jpg20230518_111058.jpg

Well done! I’m with you on the TSS. I shot my second bird the other day at 35 yards with Boss Tom #9 and it was devastating. I took a young bird, I should have held out because the next morning I box called in a big boy I heard gobbling. It was cool to see him come in on beeline, but I was tagged out.

I used TSS #9 run through a Stevens 301 20 gauge with a red dot scope. It was an experiment this year, try something other than 12 gauge auto.
I shot the TSS at 20, 30, 40, 65 yds.
Roughly 20 pellets in head and neck, with
the rest mostly from the neck up at 65 yds. Flipside, at 15 yards better not flinch because the pattern is smaller than my fist .
Also, I did buy an Indian Creek choke.
My first bird was at 30 yds. Second was at 40-45. No flopping.
Honestly I was feeling like a traitor using a red dot. But dang it was lethal.

I’ve been thinking about the 20 gauge, but had just bought a Beretta 12 gauge last fall for duck season. I also went with an after market choke, mine is a Jeb’s. Love the idea of a red dot! I might work that in next year.
