Four Guys, Three Goats and Some Bears

It made me ill to see that bear shot with a high powered rifle for sport....followed by congratulations from others.Wilderness can have a profound impact on your life without going out to kill animals.
Apart from that, isn't this a fly fishing forum?

In North America the taking of a spring black bear is more than "sport", the meat is packed out and eaten. Hunting and hunting subforums are not for everyone, but it is a reality.

SMH... So, do you eat meat? Have any leather?

If you eat a burger, does that just magically appear from your computer screen to your plate?

If you have any leather, how do you think it got from the cow to your shoes?

And, if you are a vegan, do you know how many small animals like voles, and miscellaneous rodents die harvesting your greens?

You have no idea and no real understanding of how the wilderness & nature really works from your comment.

I’m not a proponent of hunting big game animals for sport either. I’m the least likely person to voice that opinion to a stranger but I wouldn’t take part in any kind of “sport” killing. I know it’s done but I don’t personally know anyone who does it. Every piece of available meat from every animal I have ever taken has been eaten by me or someone I shared it with including the most recent hunt I reported on. In addition to the meat from those bears, we also took every ounce of fat available. That fat will be rendered and eaten as well.

Meat is THE staple of my diet. I can’t recall ever going a day without eating meat. There are some days where my diet consists of only meat. I prefer to eat wild meat, more specifically wild red meat that I have personally taken and processed. I have never been able to harvest enough wild meat to eat it exclusively year round, but given the choice, that’s what I would do.

I don’t hunt any kind of birds because I don’t like to eat any kind of bird. I don’t really like fish either so I don’t kill any fish. For me, fishing is done for sport. I can’t remember the last time I killed a fish on purpose.

It’s fine to disagree on almost anything, including my chosen dietary choices. However, you are wrong in labeling my method of food collection as “sport”. I do enjoy the process of how I get the meat I eat but the main objective is to collect meat.

I am a non-hunter, but I am a meat eater - I completely respect the way you collect your table fair and the above respectful explanation to a rather judgmental post. The way you collect your meat is far more humane than the swine and/or chicken factory farms or beef feedlots. Best of luck on your next outing.

cheers

Yes, this is a fly fishing forum. With a hunting sub-forum. It's unfortunate that seeing a hunted animal made you ill. None of us here have any moral high ground. We are descended from hunter-gatherers. How we go about it has evolved over time. Fly fishing is just a variation of hunting. I hunt for fish and then try to catch them. Catch and release fishing is the real abomination according to some. Maybe. If so, I've made my peace with it. Fishing, and formerly hunting, connects me to the earth and reminds me that I'm a part of it in a way that nothing else does. That connection is important to me.

In comments like this, I ask the individual “Have you eaten any animal meat of any kind in the last week? If so, did you kill the animal or help someone kill it? Do you know who and where they kill it? Or did you get your meat from a store?I
If you participated in the killing process you are classified as a predator in the food chain. If you got it as a grocery item, butcher shop, gift, etc., then your place in the foot web is a scavenger.”

There is nothing wrong with being a scavenger, I am usually reduced to that. I much prefer the “predator” role, killing the protein source I want.

In the TRUE way of things, this is the law.

Have a nice day.

There sure were a lot of words between the point where it became evident that they were hunting bears and any pictures of bears. Makes me wonder why you kept reading if you knew you'd be sick to see one dead? Why would you do that to yourself?

We cleaned up this thread. We want the hunting sub forum to be a place hunting content can be posted without a debate or inflammatory comments.
