Fall Geezer Trip

I try to get together with my two buddies Don and Dan once or twice a year for some sort of fly fishing centric adventure. We worked together for 30 plus years and have all been retired for close to 10 years now. We call our little group "the geezers" and this past week, we were at my place on the Oregon Coast. The weather was supposed to be nasty with a series of rain and wind events. The rain doesn't usually bother us but the forecast for 40 mph gusts might be a problem. We almost canceled except that Dan was flying in to PDX and couldn't reschedule. Fortunately, the big wind part never occurred except Tuesday afternoon/evening.

First up was crabbing in the local estuary. We ended up plucking 20 nice, full dungeness without spending much time at it (maybe two hours).

The rest of the day was spent cleaning, cooking, picking and eating and maybe a little drinking.

We scheduled tidewater salmon fishing for days two and three.

There were both chinook and coho present. Tidewater fall chinook tend to be a little more grabby than coho but in recent years, coho seemed to be more abundant. On this trip, we only encountered chinook which quite frankly, was a surprise. We hooked five but were only able to land two... mostly due to operator error .

This estuary is popular and you generally have to shoe-horn your way in to get a spot. Not this past week - I think the weather forecast scared a lot of people away. The fall geezer trip was a great success!

Just another beautiful day on the Oregon Coast!
