Brush-on super glue?

Just out of curiosity; what does a real chironomid feel like? (I very seldom fish an indicator) Are they hard like a coated chiro fly, or are they "chewy"?

I ask because I love this stuff for coating streamer heads, poppers, other foam flies. It takes a little longer to cure - a few minutes usually - but it cures to a very flexible, glossy, tough coat that feels like bass soft plastic baits. They will stick together if you just dump them together in a bin, but not irreversibly.
I've had no allergy issues with it like I do with Solarez.
This is a lot of resin - about 100 ml. This company has its own site, or it's available on amzn.

Wow that’s a great price for resin! I purchased a high-output UV light recently that was marketed for finding pet urine. I haven’t tried that yet…but it does great for curing the resin on my chironomids

Following with interest as @Zak helped me out with options after developing severe Allergic Reactions(s) to Solarez. Went to his recommended Sally Hansen and it works just fine. Thanks again @Zak. Only drawback is it takes a day to put on multiple coats.

I loved the Solarez finish to the Chironomids. Just looked perfect. So of course, Id like to replicate that.

@Northern I want to try your method with the "Lets Resin" Soft Resin, seeing as how it works for you and how you also had an Allergic Reaction to Solarez. I am trying to figure out if I should use the soft resin or the hard resin, as @Pink Nighty uses. Does the soft resin hold its clear finish over time? How does the soft clear film hold up to fish teeth? @Pink Nighty whats your thoughts regarding the hard resin?

Thanks you all in advance, for any and all feedback.

Have a great Weekend.

Bob

If a fish has the time to determine if your offering is 'chewy' enough then your reflexes are to slow. Ask me how I know...

The most promising solution to my “problem” is likely starting with more durable materials. It requires so little resin to coat a chironomid that I don’t use it up very quickly. And it’s pretty shelf-stable; likely more so than super glue. I’ll save the Gorilla glue for household stuff.

The product itself is great. Cures quick and is less tacky than other brands. The gloss effect is what I bought it for and it delivers there too.

I think the bottle is the only drawback. It's hard to put exactly how much I want exactly where I want it. I generally pop some out on a paper and use my bodkin to apply it, and it's so cheap I don't care I'm wasting it. But if it had a longer, thinner applicator it would be perfect.

Hey, Bob -
Just fyi, Solarez is the only resin I've had problems with allergy-wise. Mine is a contact allergy - if I get a speck on my hand and accidentally brush my face. Also, unfortunately, when I've held a long-finished fly tied with Slrz in my mouth while tying on tippet, etc!

Anyway, the soft resin has held up really well for me. I have at least one fly that's caught dozens of fish of several species without a scratch.

Hmm. Have you ever watched video of trout taking nymphs? Seems like they often mouth them then spit em out fast. I imagine we only feel the ones that actually grab it.
If it's not mouthfeel, then why are they spitting it out so fast? Taste?

Idea i just had that is probably meritless. When trout are eating nymphs, they're catching them in the gill rakers. So they suck in the food, and if it doesn't go into the rakers they spit it out.

I think the best cure is sticky sharp hooks

@Northern Thanks for the input. I reacted to Solarez in the exact same manner as you. It was terrible.
I am now even more excited that the "Lets Resin" works for you.

They have an allergy! Every one knows the bobber only goes down when you look away. So yea, they have time to test the chewiness, count the ribs, and do a RGB analysis on your colors vs the naturals. And then I swear that they flag it somehow to keep other fish away! The only thing that saves my day is the hefty banana in my lunchbox.

I used to use Silvercreek's UV resin and never had a problem. I don't love Sally's or Superglue (dry time and sometimes cloudy). I tried Hard as Hull for the first time during the Chironomid swap and seemed to work great.

Is that a few minutes under UV lights? Could you say more? TIA

Yes. This resin is designed for crafting, where you often use a longer exposure time for thick jewelry, etc.
I've been using a UV nail polish chamber I picked up at Goodwill years ago that does 90 sec, and doing repeat exposures while I work on another fly. Typically I use my handheld light for 20sec or so to make sure the coat is uniform, then pop it in the "oven" to set it all the way.
I actually just got a new one like this in the mail today that does 180° exposure and up to 5 min. I'll mount a foam chunk on that clear shelf to hold flies in place in the middle

Save that half bottle of Hard as Hull that has thickened for your chiros… 😉
