Beginner's fly tying question thread

I have tons of stupid questions so let me start first.

Last evening i was watching OPST tying videos and realized they are using a fancy shank tool. Searched it and got shocked by the price (and not available this moment)

Can I use the tube fly tool (available at some online stores and relatively inexpensive) for holding the intruder shank? Look like the basic mechanism is same.

Can you simply clamp the shank in your vise jaws? That's what I do with articulated shanks.

I've always just put shanks straight in my vise no program.

OPST makes some cool stuff, but they're also really good at reinventing the wheel and convincing folks they need to buy more stuff. As a new fly tyer it's pretty easy to get sucked into that.

I’ve had to get some midge jaws for my vise as it never held the smaller stuff very well. But I wanted it to hold small chronomid hooks. Now it holds those fish skull shanks easily. I change jaws for the larger stuff.
You’ll find that there are several things that will work as a shank

How in the heck do you get Guinea hackle to not stick together when you are wrapping it around for a collar??
