Backyard Wildlife

A herd of the local does often centers their activity around our yard, resting in the front yard or in the back yard. They are wary but not disturbed by our presence. This morning there were four does within 10' of the back door enjoying the morning sun. I am expecting fawns to appear any time in the next few weeks.

There is also a herd of 6 bucks that pass through the yard but primarily early or late in the day. They have already started growing their antlers for fall.

Just had the first fawn and mom trot by my window - too fast for a picture.

Deer update. On Wednesday morning, the first tiny fawn of the year and its mom trotted quickly by my window too fast for pictures. It also zoomed past my office window yesterday morning too before I could even raise the camera. Later, two members from the local herd of bucks settled down for a snooze and a few snacks in the back yard. I captured a few nice images, including head shots, of them through the kitchen window.

Today, frenetic fawn and its mom came by and I managed a few pictures; this little guy has the “zoomies”, running around frantically in the yard with its mom trotting behind. They are so thin at this stage (and all legs).

A bit later, another doe and her tiny twin fawns came by. The twins were far more sedate, posing for a few portrait shots.

There were five. Based on the amount of fur I found in my backyard, I think the local hawk or barred owl had one for lunch or dinner.

Seems there has been a lot of sex going on around these parts in the Poconos. Now we got a turtle deciding our walkway is a good place to lay some eggs. I moved her to the back 40, but she promptly returned:

Momma and a new born trying to decide who is on the wrong side of the fence. A lot of snorting and stomping going on. Damn kids just won't listen. Edit: I thought for a second she was going to jump that fence and kick my butt. Saw her by the fence but the foal was hiding in the grass at first until we got closer.PXL_20240608_170601721~2.jpg
