A heater for small spaces

Those of us that camp in pickup canopies, vans or tents need a heater that puts out a lot of heat, is adjustable and doesn't take up too much space. I have used the Kovea Cupid butane heater for several years now and as good as it is it has a couple of drawbacks. Without going into detail let's just say I have found something better.

It is the Naturehike butane heater advertised as a stove/heater but relatively useless as a stove, it will never replace my Iwatani! As a heater though I think it is superb, small, compact and lightweight and puts out tremendous heat. Best of all it is adjustable from warm to hot and burns for a long time on a single butane canister. I use mine on my kitchen module in the Casa where a USB fan is mounted directly behind it to circulate the heat. I have been camping with it for the past 3 weeks including a 2 week trip to Montana and it has been a game changer. It will raise the inside temp by 20 degrees in just over 5 minutes, provides a lot of light and is quiet. And it lights every time on the first twist of the dial.

At about $80 it is a heckuva deal, I think I paid about $120 for my Kovea back when they were only available from Korea. After my positive experience with it in Montana I ordered another case of 12 canisters from Amazon and got Gas One cartridges on sale for under $24 a case! I have 2 full cases on hand now and won't need any more for at least a year. I also use the butane on my Iwatani stove which is in use almost every day in the kitchen and is the heat of choice for my wok or cast iron pans.

I just returned from camping for several days on an island in the Columbia River and although it never got cooler than about 48 degrees it was still chilly enough that the Naturehike was really welcome. This is a well engineered and solidly built product as far as I can tell and a welcome improvement to the Kovea Cupid.

Do you need to worry about CO buildup, using it in an enclosed space? Or maybe you already have a CO detector in the Casita?

When we have any type of flame in an enclosed space we are betting our lives on a happy outcome. The proper gas detector will assure us that we win that bet.
