Looking for a lightly used mid to higher-ish quality tent for 3-4 people. Budget for a used one up to about $300. Good rainfly is a must as it'll mostly be used on the coast.

Things like:

My wife just told me yesterday she is not camping anymore. LOL, we have not camped for years. We got a couple cots to keep us off the ground we used once or twice. Got the tent from REI years ago that you can stand up in to dress which was important for us. At our age we have to pee a lot during the night so camping is no fun anymore. 😆

We have a tent that size we haven't used since our kids were small, they now are full adults with careers. It was in fine shape, mid quality. $50 if you are interested in picking it up in north Bothell. Just let me know...

Long ways away from me unfortunately (I'm in Gresham, OR). Thanks though!

This can be found at sierra trading post.

Little spendy but not bad. They have a few fly rods/reels/tools as well. Pretty affordable overall.

I have a similar older North Face basecamp from REI yard sale 25 yrs ago. Still in great shape. But I'm keeping that.

already had my eye on STP and Steep & Cheep. Still seeing what's out there.

Hope you find one. I lost 2 in 2020 at Potholes during one of those crazy windstorms. Had them anchored down well, but the wind basically flattened them and started snapping the fiberglass poles. I bought a new one from Costco. Haven't tried it yet. Was also able to get replacement poles from my better of the 2 tents that broke.

I've been doing some fall/winter camping for deer hunting and if I were planning to spend time on the coast, I'd do the same approach as Mark above. This is what I do for hunting. Should be able to stand or at least come close to easily move around and get dressed. The cots are a big plus. If it rains (or in my case, the 2 feet of snow starts to melt and you have a few inches of water inside the tent (!!) the cots help keep you high and dry. And keep your gear in plastic totes that can slide under the cots and/or be pulled out and used as a table for eating, playing cards, etc. If you plan to be there more than 2 or 3 nights - a large tarp over the camping area really helps. Keeps most of the rain off your tent and allows you to walk around and get to the campfire without getting soaked. Either way, be sure to double down on the waterproofing. Seal the seams - even if they are supposed to be waterproof already. And then use all the tent guy lines to pull the rain fly off the main tent - allows better breathability, reduces condensation, and prevents leaking. Probably all stuff you already know - but I have no tent to offer you, so you get my unsolicited advice ;)

Yeah I currently have a Marmot 2 person (really a 1 person) backpacking tent that I put a full size cot in. It works for me for the most part, but it's snug. It's a great tent and I still have a lot I can use it for. But when I'm car camping at Fort Stevens for Buoy 10 or doing a weekend with the family, I want something with a bit more room. So we trashed the bigger old tent my wife and kid tend to use, and want to get a nicer-ish 3/4 season we can all three use, or just me with my cot and other comforts.

Evan, have you looked at a Mountain Hardwear Skyview 3. It's a 3.5 season tent that sleeps 3, 4 if you're really really really good friends. It has a good two-backpack vestibule and two front doors, one being an easy midnite exit for the prostate gifted. I think I only put 6 nights on mine before the day my guts exploded, ending my backpacking/primitive camping forever. I would describe it as pristine.

I'm definitely intrigued. Can you shoot me a message with a photo of which one it is and what you want for it? Looks like there's a few different versions that have come out over the years.

we ended up with a 6 person tent for family camping (one kid and a dog) and that's just about right (3 cots). my 4 person Kelty is my solo tent these days....

Just take the number listed on the tent and subtract 2.

Yeah, ideally I'll end up with 2. A 3ish person for my solo camping and a 6 for family. Main reason I'm looking for lightly used to soften the financial blow.

This is similar to what we had

those are great tents! I actually need something with a full rainfly for the coastal stuff. I've found the ones with the partial fly just get me soaked. I really appreciate you checking though!

For camping on the coast, I would look for a European design - one that has a freestanding rain fly which allows you to first set up the fly and then go under it clip the tent body to the fly superstructure. This keeps the tent body dry if you have to set up in the rain. This design allows the fly to act as a big covered hanging out area when the tent isn’t hung inside - and allow you to unclip a few of the tent suspension hooks and push the tent (and sleeping bags) to the rear, creating more hang out space. (but that feature is pretty much negated if one use cots)

I would highly recommend Hilleberg tents but they are pricey. Their US HQ is in Edmonds do you might given them a call but I don’t know if any of them fly fish. 😎 You could also call Exped as their US HQ is near Seattle. They have a tent on sale right now that may fit the bill and if not, several of them fly fish.

I also left a message for one of my old reps who fly fishes as he also does a very good tent line.

I have the Kelty Trail Ridge 4 and 6. They have a full rainfly and I’ve stayed dry in some heavy storms. No longer made, but maybe you can find one. We’re not quite ready to part with them.
