Mauna Loa Eruption

The lava flow has hit flatter terrain now and has slowed considerably. There is a decent-to-good chance it will stop before it hits the main Inouye/Saddle Road highway.....fingers crossed that it will not impact the road. If it does cross the highway, it'll put every truck bringing goods and gas to Kona from the Port of Hilo onto the Hamakua Coast highway, which is much tighter and MUCH slower.

So gas and beer could be slower to arrive in Kona.

It is a jaw dropping experience. Tutu Pele is beautiful in her glory...aloha.

VOG plays hell on the lungs of many people, especially the old and young or those with asthma type issues. In 2009 I was working engineering projects at the Moanalua Medical Center on Oahu when Kona (southerly) winds blew the VOG from a minor venting directly onto Oahu, and the hospitals emergency facilities were jammed with respiratory distress patients. Can only image how bad it is for those downwind of this major venting.

Trivia points: The diagnosis for volcanic glass in the lungs is the longest word in English...
