fly tyers meeting (Albany Fly Tiers Expo March 10-11)

Ok, you guys got me all psyched for this. I just put in a couple vacation days to be able to attend this. Can anyone tell me about the banquet? What type of stuff do you typically see for auction items?

I haven’t taken up tying yet (I know, I know…) but am interested in the event. Those that have gone in the past, is there general fly fishing content here or is it dedicated to the art of tying only?
So, there’s like 50 tyers doing demos in each session. You can certainly ask about how to fish the flies. They also have fishing related demonstrations. There are also seminars and lectures on fishing topics.

Fly tyers, fly tyers, fly tyers…
Vendors, vendors, vendors…
Instructions, instructions, instructions…
Auctions, auctions, auctions…
The Banquet has some nice framed fly plates, high end rods, etc.

Get on their website for further details.

I probably won’t be tying this year (unless as a “fill-in” spot). I had too many things going at the time of signups, so I didn’t commit before the deadline. But things have mellowed out since and will be attending.

Looking forward to meeting people again and am glad the show is back on.

Originally the event was primarily fly tying. Nowadays there are casting classes and demonstrations. And yes, while there were no vendors when it started there are plenty now willing to sell you anything from a drift boat to tippet material. I've yet to meet a beginning fly fisher who didn't gain a lot by attending the Expo.

I'm not sure of the programs this year but usually they have seminars and classes for all things flyfishing. It's like a mini FFI (FFF) Conclave.
We going to see you there?

It is possible. I'll be wearing one of the old FFF shirts if I make it. When they switched from two to three our sessions, I stopped demonstration tying because my back wouldn't allow me to sit that long on a folding chair to tie flies. Aging is a bitch.

weird question (maybe not)....but, how does one "get" to tie at such an event? is it a who's cousin's brother's sister's third cousin do you know? Or is it just the cousin's brother's sister's friends who get a go at it? lol. Who am I kiddin', they probably couldn't handle my opinionated attitude when it comes to my tying. Either way, I think it would be kinda fun to do.

ehhh, I'd probably make too much of a mess with all of the bucktail trimmings for my neighbors.

They never cared when I filled the floor with Dahlberg diver trimmings. Somebody gets paid to do the sweepings.
wish I had that at home!

Contact Sherrie Steele or Hal Gordon.
I’ll be there Friday and Saturday…look me up and I’ll introduce you to Hal.

Yup... It's very easy to volunteer to do demonstration tying. Once they get your name and email address that's pretty much all there is to it.

In the past, if you showed up with your tying materials and someone didn't show for their spot, you'd be able to take it and then be asked to come back the next year. There's one or two no-shows.

Best bet is to talk with Sherrie or Hal.
