NFR Talk to me about portaledges (climbing sleeping systems) - your likes/dislikes

Beats "sleeping" in your harness or in slings. I never got into big walls when I was a climber but if you know you're going to be up there for a while, it makes a ton of sense to make yourself as comfortable as possible.
 
When I make moved to the NW in the early 70’s I met some folks who were into backpacking and hiking. I got invited to go on a “hike”. Well, a climb was involved and they said they had all the necessary gear. The climb ended up at a rock face and we ended up “hanging” off the face for the night. It was a loooog night for me. Every pebble that came down or slight breeze made me think that the end was near. I was less concerned my first night in Vietnam!!!
The next morning, on the hike out, I decided to make new friends that were into safer hobbies.

I have slept in those way high up, and it's way better than you think. Not super comfortable, but you will never, ever sleep in a crazier place in your life. Quite an amazing life experience, you don't know what you are missing.
 
Likes: most people who acquire one generally manage to eventually talk a significant other into one for the night, even if it's only hanging off the light fixture in your apartment living room, and you are desperately hoping your landlord will never need to know exactly where and why you managed to get it to hang. No shortage of interesting life experiences are attainable with a good portaledge.
 
Likes: hang one of those from a tree in your backyard, or when you go camping, and your kids will consider you some sort of awesome amazing demi-god for the incredibly cool pop up play structure you just provided for them and their friends. Potentially worth it to get one just for this use.
 
I’m with Evan on this one, definitely not for me, or was ever for me. However, I bet waking up in the morning with your coffee enjoying the view would be priceless.

I have done some open cave diving in the Caribbean , thats as much cave diving as I wanted , it's very nice to be able to look up ,and see the surface , and being able to swim up ,and out . :) That cave diving disaster in I believe Italy recently was pretty bad .
 
Check out the new inflatable portaledges. Way more comfortable.
 
Cave diving, sky diving, swimming with sharks, sleeping on a portaledge - all on my Never Ever To Do list.
